about
A rock track written by a classical pianist/composer and a biologist/poet. Performed by a young pop singer with jazz roots, a rock guitarist, a metal drummer, and a classical violinist.
We explore the present ecological crisis, the beauty that remains, and the wilderness within all of us.
The Wilderness in Us
Shann Weston with Grisha Krivchenia
I've seen wolves
and grizzly bears
and ancient stands of redwood
Orca whales and salmon
leaping in the Salish Sea:
The wild ones were teaching me to walk
Through the wilderness in me.
Trees stay rooted
in the Earth
while reaching for the sky.
My spirits rise to see them climb
Leaves dancing on the breeze.
Sacred trees are teaching me to stand
inside the wilderness in me.
Salmon follow scent of home,
to cold streams of their birth.
Bestow their eggs and leave
their bodies to the Earth.
Know your place, and spread your gifts
Is what the salmon say
Love this world, even as it slips away
Hold me close, my daughters
and listen to the rain
Grief is just a partner
to the pleasures of love
Community and kin keep you strong
when times are getting tough
Orca whales losing beloved family…
despite the pain, they know the joys of living free
They mourn and then the whole clan celebrates,
'Cause they love this world, even as it slips away.
I cry for the songs gone silent
Forgotten as the busy world can’t stop to breathe.
Hold courage for the future,
resilience and versatility.
How do we start
to turn grief to grace,
Transcend our brokenness,
and honor this place?
What would it sound like if we all rose up to say
that we love this world? We won't just let it slip away.
Coda:
breath by breath,
step by step,
we keep showing up.
In the miracles
of sun and earth,
we set our souls to growing up.
Stand together-
witness beauty-
and guide the young
The wild ones are asking us
to walk the wilderness in us,
walk the wilderness in us.
